Upfront Septic responded to a Lakebay, WA property after the homeowner reported wastewater backing up since Saturday. The home was built in the 1950s, and the septic system's exact layout was unclear because no as-built drawing was available. Our technicians identified a two-compartment septic tank and noted what appeared to be another compartment beneath the house, although the system configuration could not be confirmed during the visit.
Upon inspection, the small access opening for the first compartment was completely full, and the tank contents were very thick. Our team pumped approximately 600 gallons from the tank. During the service, technicians observed a long gap along the bottom of the divider wall, allowing thick effluent to flow into the first compartment. After pumping, the homeowner was able to flush the plumbing fixtures again.
Our technicians also noted a particularly soft, squishy area in the yard where the soil had a slight sewage odor. The homeowner explained that the area becomes noticeably softer during summer and that vegetation does not grow there. These conditions may indicate a concern with wastewater movement or the drainfield, but further evaluation would be needed to determine the cause.
Although pumping restored the homeowner's ability to flush at the time of service, the tank's unusual configuration, gap beneath the divider wall, and soft area in the yard warrant further investigation. Additional assessment can help identify the source of the recurring backup and determine whether repairs or drainfield maintenance are needed.
