We ran a camera through the system to check the drain field against the property's as-built drawing. It confirmed what the drawing showed: the infiltrators run almost the whole way to the fence, and there are five lateral lines. Checking the real layout against the paperwork is worth the time on its own — it is what tells you exactly what is down there before anything else gets decided.
With the layout established, we opened the valves so the effluent disperses evenly across those laterals rather than loading one stretch of the field harder than the rest. The caps on the pipe ends were left in place; each one has a small hole in it.
We then pumped the septic tank, which is plastic on this property, along with the pump basin, and replaced the tank lids.
